A hot shoe is a mounting point on the top of your camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories. It takes the form of an angled metal bracket surrounding a metal contact point which completes an electrical connection between camera and accessory for standard, brand-independent flash synchronization.

The hot shoe is shaped somewhat like an inverted, squared-off "U" of metal. The matching adapter on the bottom of the flash unit slides in from the back of the camera and is sometimes secured by a clamping screw on the flash. In the center of the "U" is a metal contact point. This is used for standard, brand-independent flash synchronization. For the protection of the hot-shoe, there comes an important accessory called as hot-shoe cover. There are many websites such as https://gariz.com.au/ from where you can order these covers.

The generic hot shoe cover is made of flexible rubber and fits most standard hot shoes, offering dust and debris protection. A bubble level on top provides an easy reference to check your camera’s balance when it’s on a tripod or when you’re shooting handheld.

You need to keep in mind that these covers are not a one-size-fits-all affair. Even if you can use one flash unit across cameras of several manufacturers, this does not mean that their hot-shoe covers will fit one another.
